Windsor Waste Management take part in Road Safety Week 2024

Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week (organised by Brake Charity) is Brake’s biggest road safety campaign. Every year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities get involved to share important road safety messages, remember people affected by road death and injury, and raise funds to help Brake care for more road victims and campaign for safe roads for everyone.

At Windsor Waste Management, road safety is our top priority. To mark Road Safety Week 2024, we organised a series of activities to engage our team and highlight the importance of safe driving practices for everyone on the road.

Driver Training

We kicked off the week with a focus on driver education. Our team participated in an online driving training session provided by Brake. This programme, known as Pledge Training, addresses driver behavioural risks and provides strategies for managing them. Covering six key areas of road risk, the training is tailored to the challenges faced by those driving for work.

Driving in Icy Conditions

As temperatures drop, icy roads become a considerable hazard. We shared valuable tips and resources on how to drive safely in icy conditions, reminding our team to adjust their driving habits to the season. For practical advice on navigating icy roads, check out this guide from the RAC: Driving in Ice and Hail.

Our Approach to Safety

Safety is embedded in everything we do. As a business accredited with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications, and holding FORS Silver status, we’re committed to upholding high standards for quality, safety, and best practices. To reinforce this, we encouraged our team to review two key policies: Vulnerable Road Users and Driving & Travelling to Work. These policies outline our commitment to safety for all road users and our employees.

The Highway Code

Understanding the Highway Code is crucial for protecting vulnerable road users. We shared a short film from Brake about how it supports people who walk, cycle, and ride horses. Watch the video here. We also featured safety advice from our experienced driver, Barry, who shared this tip: "Be aware of everything and anything around you—you never know what’s coming."

Road Safety Week Tip

Truck Awareness

To wrap up Road Safety Week, our focus was on Truck Awareness. Calvin, one of our skilled lorry drivers, invited the office team to experience life from a lorry driver’s perspective. Sitting in the driver’s seat, our team learned about the built-in safety features of our lorries and gained insights into the blind spots and obstacles that drivers encounter daily. This hands-on experience fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by professional drivers and emphasised the importance of sharing the road responsibly.

A Shared Commitment to Safer Roads

Road Safety Week was a valuable opportunity for us to reflect on our driving practices and engage in meaningful activities that promote road safety. At Windsor Waste Management, we’re committed to protecting our team and the communities we serve by fostering a culture of safety.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the week a success! Together, we can make our roads safer for all.
